Leonard Fife, one of sixty thousand conscientious objectors and deserters who fled to Canada to avoid service in Vietnam, reveals all his secrets to demythologize his mythical life. This is the second time Paul Schrader has directed one of Banks’ novels for the screen, following his adaptation of Verijäljet (1997).
It is a drama about accidental conscientious objectors between Virginia and Montreal in the late 1960s and 2023. Leo Fife (Jacob Elordi/Richard Gere) is a famous left-wing documentary filmmaker in Canada who is dying of cancer in 2023.
Leo has two former students, Malcolm (Michael Imperioli) and Diana (Victoria Hill), who interview him for a CBC documentary about his life. We soon learn that the myth of Leo’s past as a Vietnam War resister and free-spirited Cuban traveler is different from Leo’s current (real?) truth.
Leo is somewhat confused, but the story he tells is of a superficial, aimless life that has caused much suffering to others, including his two ex-wives Amy (Penelope Mitchell) and Alicia (Kristine Froseth) and son Cornel (Zach Shaffer). Oh, Canada is a strange movie in many ways, but it tells a compelling story about the myths we all create about ourselves.
Paul Schrader’s use of multiple actors in multiple roles is confusing and unnecessary, but Richard Gere does a great job trying to tell the truth to a woman with which he spent 30 years. “Oh, Canada” is not an evasion of the Vietnam War; instead, it’s a drama about confronting one’s own myths.

Le plus triste, c’est que tant d’entreprises font ce genre de choses aux gens, les transformant en simples rouages de la machine. Regardez-le absolument.

I’m sure this film was made with a lot of care and love, BUT what was most lacking in my opinion was BREATHING. And I agree with the other less favorable reviews that the opening scene was a terrible example of lip syncing, especially since I couldn’t see Ms. Jolie breathing!
Sure, La Callas lived a charmed life, but I felt like the focus was more on the visuals in this film. This is the film that made me stop watching until the end and I regret it. No need to waste time scrolling endlessly – here are a bunch of new movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix this month.

Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, a.k.a. Except for the bat signal in the final shot of the season finale, we never got our Robert Pattinson cameo in "The Penguin." In this short video, IMDb tries to answer: Where the heck was Batman?. Colin Farrell fought hard to have his version of The Penguin smoke tobacco in The Batman (2022) but was unsuccessful.
For his own series however, the character is depicted as an occasional tobacco user, with a preference for cigars.. An umbrella drops and the logo changes to the Warner Bros logo.. Featured in The Graham Norton Show: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024).
So, the first episode is done and it was excellent. I mean yes, he’s wearing a fat suit but you’d never know it. His attitude, body language, voice all make you submerge into the character and only see Penguin.
It has no relation to any of the other live TV penguins, Burgess Meredith or Robin Lord Taylor. He’s a Scorsese mobster but without the florid language.The plot is simple, similar to Lord Taylor’s Penguin in the CW’s Gotham. The Penguin is a middle man in a mob organization.
Up until now he’s been doing his time, slowly moving up in the mob and then, with the effects of the Riddler blowing up the city sea wall and the death of his boss in that movie, he sees a chance to move up in the world. Now begins the game of cross, double cross and, I suppose, triple cross.

Absolutely nailed the tone and atmosphere. Gritty and grimy and dark, but Farrell is able to capture that glimmer of charm Gandolfini's Tony Soprano did.There are similarities to the sopranos especially in tone. A lot of dark stuff goes down in this opening episode, but there's still comedic moments that match the tone and don't undermine it.Where to start with Farrell.
Love to see talented star actors go all in on roles like this, and the makeup/cgi or whatever exactly they did with transforming him into the penguin physically not only passes the eye test, it looks incredible realistic. There is always the risk that if the make up job isn't good enough or is just a little off, it can completely distract. In the penguin, it adds to his performance and the overall quality of the show because it's such a damn good job.
I'm maybe a little biased because he is one of my favorite actors prior to this show, but I think this is going to get him well-deserved accolades.I never really tune into new shows right away because I like to watch the episodes all at once, but I wanted to see how this one actually came out.Didn't disappoint, in fact blew me away.
