Ich muss sagen, dass Regisseur Pablo Larrains 2024 erschienener Beitrag zu seiner ikonischen Frauentrilogie des 20. Jahrhunderts eine Enttäuschung war. Das beginnt mit der Besetzung, denn Angelina Jolie ist vielleicht selbst zu ikonisch, um die überragende Diva Maria Callas zu spielen, die am wenigsten bekannte des Trios, die anderen beiden sind „Jackie“ (2016) und Diana in „Spencer“ (2021). Jolie vermittelt die nötige Selbstbeherrschung, um das majestätische Image der größten Opernsängerin der Welt zu tragen, aber körperlich wirkt sie zu skelettartig, um die robustere Figur der Callas überzeugend nachzuahmen. Der schwermütige, längere Film, geschrieben von Steven Knight, behandelt die letzte Woche von Callas‘ Leben im Paris des Jahres 1977, ein fiktionalisierter Bericht mit unvermeidlichen Rückblenden, der sich insgesamt wie eine Geistergeschichte abspielt. Alle Produktionselemente wie die auf Hochglanz polierte Kinematographie und die Details des Bühnenbildes sind beeindruckend gelungen, aber Larrains kreative Entscheidungen sind eher fragwürdig, zum Beispiel die halluzinogenen Bilder von Chören, die ihr in der Öffentlichkeit etwas zurücksingen. Da ist die zweideutige Rolle einer Interviewerin (undurchsichtig gespielt von Kodi Smit-McPhee) mit demselben Namen wie ihre verschreibungspflichtigen Medikamente, die sie zwingt, sich mit ihrer Vergangenheit auseinanderzusetzen. Einige der Rückblenden deuten auf faszinierendere Elemente ihrer Geschichte hin, wie ihre eher unausgereifte Beziehung zu Aristoteles Onassis, ihre traumatisierenden Begegnungen mit Nazis als Kind und ein faszinierendes Gespräch mit JFK (gespielt von Caspar Phillipson, der in „Jackie“ die gleiche, etwas belanglose Rolle spielte). Ihr abgeschiedenes Leben wird nur von zwei ergebenen Dienern verlassen, die ergreifend von Pierfrancesco Favina und Alba Rohrwacher gespielt werden. Dennoch wird Jolies Starstatus auf eine Weise präsentiert, die ihrem einzigartigen Talent gerecht wird, fast gleichzeitig Hybris und Verletzlichkeit zu vermitteln. „Hundert Jahre Einsamkeit“ ist eine der größten TV- und Streaming-Premieren dieses Monats.
