Well, what can I say?
Having watched the first episode of this Dexter prequel, I am absolutely blown away. Even though it’s been a long time since the original, the show feels incredibly authentic. From the opening title sequence to the younger versions of the characters, their mannerisms and personalities are spot on.

It’s a faithful recreation of the essence of the original and I hope it serves as a strong build-up to Dexter: Resurrections. Fans of the series are in for a treat! If you’re a movie junkie like me, then you’ll appreciate the time and effort that Clyde Phillips and everyone else put into making this happen.

As a continuation of what happened in Batman and the disaster that hit the city, we saw an opening scene that was one of the most amazing disasters that happened, and the chaos we see with the Penguin’s gaze is nothing more than an indication that the Penguin was placed in the right place at the right time to take advantage of the massive chaos, and of course, he is also the right person.

One of the series’ greatest strengths is its cast
While some of the prequels stumble under the weight of established canon, Original Sin largely succeeds, fleshing out the Dexter mythology while delivering an engaging standalone story. Patrick Gibson, though initially a questionable choice, steps into the role of young Dexter, capturing the character’s signature blend of social awkwardness and terrifyingly calculated violence. Molly Brown shines as Deb, giving the younger version of the character a fiery spirit and vulnerability that resonates deeply. The supporting cast, including Alex Shimizu as Masuka and James Martinez as Batista, also deliver strong performances, effectively capturing the essence of their original counterparts.
Original Sin is not without its flaws
Christian Slater, however, feels somewhat miscast as Harry, struggling to fully embody the character’s inner conflicts. The series cleverly weaves in familiar elements from the original Dexter, including iconic musical cues and visual motifs, while also exploring new territory. The plotline involving Harry’s deceased son adds a layer of complexity to Dexter’s origin story, though it occasionally veers into melodramatic territory. The central mystery surrounding Dexter’s current location in Iron Lake provides a compelling thread of tension throughout the season.
The overreliance on licensed music sometimes clashes with the show’s darker themes
The pacing can be uneven, with some episodes feeling rushed while others dragging on. And while the CGI is generally better than the first episode, some scenes still suffer from noticeable visual effects issues. Despite these shortcomings, Dexter: Original Sin is a worthwhile addition to the Dexter universe. It’s a darkly funny exploration of Dexter’s past, offering a fresh perspective on his transformation into the Bay Harbor Butcher.
